I am from sheer pink curtains
and a “rod of correction” hanging in the hallway.
I am from a freezer full of ice cream flavors; a magnet home to the neighbor kids.
A home not just a house.
(One where we added on a larger family room instead getting another sibling).
I am from a backyard garden of berries and veggies
whose clippings and seeds came from sweet grandma Bessie’s garden.
She liked to nibble on my ear.
I am from Fancy Eileen and her love for entertaining. I have her quick laughter and love for beautiful things.
I’m from hard work, responsibility and family devotions.
From popcorn or pancakes for Sunday dinner.
I am from sitting through endless boring baseball games.
But with a few art lessons could sit for countless focused hours making pictures with embroidery thread.
I am from hospitality and generosity.
And attending church every time the doors were open.
I am from the moments
Being affectionately tucked into bed,
or called to from the stairs,
"Goodnight John Boy"
I am from the security of knowing
I was deeply loved
even if I was to them a
Perplexing, moody,
creative mess of a child.
